The final analysis

At last, all the details of all the stages of the trip have been posted and are available here.

There is one post per stage and each one contains:

• Title (inc start and finish location of the stage)
• A map showing the route (click to see full-size)
• A graphic showing the vertical profile of the route (click to see full-size)*
• A short narrative
• The downloadable tracklog file generated by the GPS (text format)
• A downloadable track file (Magellan MapSend format)
• Summary statistics of the stage

*All vertical profiles have the same horizontal and vertical scale to make them directly comparable.

All feedback would be gratefully received (use the comment feature).

All stages up to date

I have updated the information on the stage descriptions to give precise start and finish points for the day and an indication where I will be for lunch. Only a couple of the lunchtimes have been fixed (and these are indicated). If you'd like to meet up for lunch, with me and those riding with me, on any of the days please send me a text on 07932 107109 with a venue suggestion and I will let you know when I/we can get there. Normally, this will be between 12:30 and 2:30.

The updated itinerary can be accessed through the links to the left or through the summary page.

As a guide the first stage of the day will start at 8am. Lunch will be between 12:30 and 2:30 and we will finish the day when we finish!

Accommodation / Stage Points

Here is the list of booked accommodation. These locations will define the starting point for the first stage of each day and the end point for last stage of each day.

The approximate locations for lunch are given here. These are still to be firmed up but I will edit this posting as soon as full details are available. For the days with two stages, the lunch locations will mark the end of the first sage of the day and start of the second stage.

Route change to allow VIP to participate

Although there is not much commenting going on on this blog :-(, there is a lot going on in the background! A V.I.P. has agreed to participate (more on this later) and this has affected Stage 7 - WHITCHURCH to PRESTON. This will now be the first and only stage on Day 5 (2/6/06) and will go down the Wirral peninsula, along the bottom of the peninsula, cross the Mersey on the ferry and then on up the coast and into Preston (about 100 miles). I will post the exact route shortly.

This means that all subsequent stages will take place a day later and the ride will finish on 7/6/06 (not 6/6/06). This will also mean that we will be cycling through the Great Glen past Loch Ness on my birthday which will be perfect!

STOP PRESS: Complete change around

Following Dan's comments and some research in the weather section of the BBC's website, I have decided to do the trip the other way around ie from Land's End to John O'Groats. I have re-done the stage descriptions and the other entries in the blog to do with the route and itinerary so all the information should be correct. I have got over the problem that the route now looks like it's up hill by turning the map around.

950+ miles, 96 towns, 16 stages, 9 days

The plan is to depart from John O'Groats on 29/5/06 (first thing) and glide into Land's End on 7/6/06. This plan may change in some of the detail but should be firm enough for you to commit the appropriate dates in your diary. Click here to download an Excel Spreadsheet with the details of the route. I plan to stay in or near the towns in bold but hope to be able to arrange farm-based B&B through Farm Stay UK. I will post these as soon as they have been booked.
