Is net:gain sustainable?

net:gain aims to develop a service which local VCO UK online centres can turn into a sustainable social enterprise. To reduce risk, and build in efficiency, the programme uses a social franchise model. The 'return on investment' for the national partners (including the funders) is improved capacity, rather than financial gain.

The UK online centre network is backed by a substantial (£14m) investment from the Learning and Skills Council, providing each centre with resources to support social enterprise and long term sustainability.

The business model for centres is based on full cost recovery through the membership prices charged. However, whilst the market for the service develops, the full cost of membership is heavily subsidised by Capacitybuilders. Cash flow projections for individual net:gain centres show that once established, the service can be viable beyond the funded programme.

The membership model for net:gain will encourage an ongoing relationship between VCOs and their local centre, with opportunities for flexible services, discounts and continuing informal and formal peer networking.
