Defra and the Commission for Rural Communities sponsored 30 places each at ruralnet|2006 for delegates from the rural voluntary and community sector in England.
Barry Gardiner, Rural Affairs Minister said,
"These places will provide the chance for voluntary and community groups who may not necessarily be able to afford it, to have direct input into discussions on rural service provision at the local level".
"The ruralnet conference enables delegates to share best practice and to influence decision makers. There are so many important issues facing people in rural areas on a day-to-day basis - this is an excellent forum for making funding and service providers aware of these issues and how they can be best tackled at the local level".
The free places scheme is aimed primarily at people who simply cannot afford the conference fee such as community volunteers or activists trying to get a new project underway in their community and these applicants must take top priority.
