Olympic Gold Medallist, Chris Boardman, has signed up for Stage 7 of the ruralnet|uk Participation Ride from John O'Groats to Land's End.
Starting on 29 May, Simon Berry, the Chief Executive of ruralnet|uk, will attempt a 10-day bike-athon from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for the charity's Participation Fund. The Participation Fund will provide free support to people involved in rural voluntary action. It will give volunteers free access to ruralnet|uk's online services (Experts Online, xPRESS Digest and many others) and enable more community activists to participate in ruralnet|uk's annual conference.
If Simon makes it to Stage 7 (Whitchurch to Preston) he will be joined by Chris Boardman MBE, Britain's best known cyclist. In 2003, Chris and Simon spent 10 days as part of a Charity Ride across the Yucatan peninsula in aid of the Acorns Children's Hospice.
With Chris Boardman doing his bit, what could you contribute? There are many options and for most of them no cycling is necessary! Here are some ideas.
1 You can make a donation - details are given on the Participation Ride Blog: www.simonberry.net
2 You can join a part of the ride yourself - sign up via the Blog - numbers for each stage will be limited.
3 You might be willing to comment and give advice via the Blog.
4 You can leave a message of support via the Blog.
You are invited to follow the tortuous preparation for this ride at www.simonberry.net with full details of the good cause, the 16 stages of the route and the hills on the way. The plan is to maintain the Blog during the ride so that supporters can share the experiences of a long distance cyclist through the video clips, full GPS data and photos taken along the route.
Over 10 days Simon and companions that take up to the challenge will cover around 950 miles and pass through 96 towns from Bridestow through Bromyard to Brora. Simon plans to cruise into John O'Groats on 7 June. It will then take two days to get back to his home town of Rugby (by train).
