Hi
Great web site, thanks for the info.

I and three friends are doing JOGLE starting on May 13th and we are currently planning our route. We plan to complete the trip in 12 days. We are raising money for the Jane Tomlinson cancer appeal.

I notice that you are planning to use the National cycle network and wondered if we also did it, but north to south, and reported back to you on how we found it? Do you know if the route uses any tracks as we are all using road bikes??

Would this help you guys??

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for your email.

Have you seen my blog from last year? http://www.ruralnet.typepad.com/endtoend/ - this has loads of info on it - you would find it helpful I think.

There are tracks on the NCN route - details on request! But . . . I wanted to be the first to do the trip on the NCN and so I'd be grateful if you would divert occassioanally and not steal my thunder! I was planning to start on 26/5 but have had to postpone to 28/8 due to family commitments.

If you are doing JOGLE I would strongly recommend to you look at: http://www.beewee.co.uk/JOGLE2005index.htm This was the route I followed in reverse in 2006.

I have gathered a collection end to end bookmarks here http://del.icio.us/endtoend/ - click on the jogle tag to see the ones starting at John o' Groats.

Any feedback would be gratefully received.

Regards

Simon

Nice stuff... tough to keep track of all that is happening. I end up reading 100 odd blogs daily. Plus there is news. You could also enrich your blog by adding current news on your blog... try out the news widget from widgetmate.com

I have recc'ed the Slaithwaite to Hebden Bridge section. Here are a few comments which may help;
The climb out of Slaithwaite is VERY steep. When you get to 681T3 the Route 68 is shown left, which is off your route. It takes the clockwise route of Intake Rd and Laund Rd, bypassing 681T4 and rejoining your route just north of 681T5.
Is it your intention to stick rigidly to the NCN route? Because once through Sowerby Bridge it joins the Rochdale Canal towpath. At Mytholmroyd it leaves the canal and takes a circuatous route around the village including a length of offroad cycle path. Not a problem, but it will slow you down, particularly if your daily mileage is 80+.
It is easier to nip through the village on the main road and approach Hebden Bridge either on the A646T (cycle lane) or rejoin the canal towpath where it is crossed by the main road.

Thanks for this Rob. We will try and stick to the NCN as much as we can. By the time we get to Yorkshire though we will know how practical this is. I look forward to meeting up again.

With best wishes

Hello Simon,

We corresponded briefly about your planned NCN Land's End to John O'Groats ride. I'm delighted to see you're soon to set off.

As part of OpenStreetMap's mission to map the world for free (Creative Commons), our UK users are placing special emphasis on mapping the National Cycle Network.

Since we last corresponded, a dedicated OpenStreetMap NCN map has
been established, at http://www.gravitystorm.co.uk/osm/ . We have also launched a new, easy-to-use map editor. We are in discussions with one local Sustrans officer about using OSM to create local cycle maps and hope to expand the work.

Would you be prepared to let us use your tracklogs? They would be of great assistance in mapping the network. I presume from your site that you will be gathering tracklogs but we can, of course, lend you
a GPS receiver if you need one.

Best of luck with the ride.

Best wishes,
Richard Fairhurst

Hi Richard

I'd be delighted if you used my tracklogs to contribute to OpenStreetMap. I have my own GPS. I'll be putting them onto the blog but will make a note to send them to you by email as well.

With best wishes

Simon,

Put me down for £200 sponsorship. Sorry to complicate matters but I would like to donate from my Charity Aid Foundation account which I can't do through the 'just giving' system. I will put a cheque in the post.

Good Luck!

Cynical Porcas here.
What's all this about electric bikes then? Sue reckons you've been hitching.
Anyhow, where the hell is Glossop, somewhere near Bristol? I can't believe you've got any further
How's the bum? Emma says " blood orange comes to mind ", the mind boggles.
Oh, Emma just told Glossop is oop north, bloody hell, you've been going some!
The Porcae are impressed, keep it oop!
